The challenge

Klarna offers payment solutions to e-stores in Europe and North America to simplify the buying experience. Klarna provides payment after delivery, which lets buyers receive ordered goods before any payment is due, while assuming the credit and fraud risk so sellers can rest assured they’ll be paid. Klarna is now the leading provider of invoice-based payments for online merchants, employing over 3,000 people and servicing 45 million customers in 18 European countries. The challenge was to replace a legacy system with a core platform for business rules management and real-time credit risk analytics and decisioning that would effectively support their status as one of the fastest growing companies in Europe.

Why Provenir?

Klarna needed a platform that delivered flexible, agile rules management and advanced decisioning to support substantial and growing transaction volumes in multiple countries. After a rigorous selection process, including a challenging proof of concept, Klarna chose Provenir. “We had to ensure that the solution could function under the most demanding of circumstances and integrate with our internal systems. I am pleased to say that Provenir outperformed their competitors in the areas of functionality, flexibility and overall technology, ” said Brian Billingsley, CEO of Klarna North America.

The Solution

Customer onboarding was configured to process hundreds of transactions per second to support rapid business growth — without compromising the control and accuracy of the operations.

The initial implementation in Denmark took just over four months. Roll out in the remaining 18 European countries was completed in less than nine months, and the deployment in the US was completed in just a few weeks.

The Klarna business team has been involved in the project from inception, enabling them to configure and maintain the applications to the exact requirements of each country with minimum involvement from Klarna IT and Provenir.
